The Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) on Thursday congratulated the countries in the Southeast Asia Region of the World Health Organization (WHO) on being certified polio-free.

That is a historic milestone in the worldwide effort to end polio. The 11 countries in the region are home to 1.8 billion people and represent the fourth of six WHO regions of the globe to become polio free.
