The legendary Oak Room in New York City’s Plaza Hotel was the epicenter of dinner society in the 1930s, ’40s and ’50s. Unaccompanied ladies were not permitted in the adjacent Oak Bar, but certainly were welcome to perch in the high-backed banquettes or at the linen-covered tables in the center of the Oak Room where people loved to see and be seen.
Bill Dowd recently came across a copy of a late-1950s Oak Room menu that inspired him to select items from it that he plans to recreate with modern taste sensibilities as the first of our “Rotary Home Cooking” fundraising dinners for the 2013-14 Rotary Year.
