The official changeover of district governors took place Friday evening during a new Rotary event called “The Celebration of Heroes.”
The gala dinner dance, held at the Saratoga Hilton, was virtually sold out as Rotarians and guests came together to honor 24 different attending charities for their service to various communities throughout District 7190 and elsewhere.
By a vote of those attending, three charities were selected for cash awards. They were:
1. Sports Are for Everyone (SAFE), which received a $1,000 award for its 21-year-long effort making it possible for youngsters with various disabilities to know and enjoy participating in a host of sports activities.
2. To Love a Child, which received $500 award for its work in providoing humanitarian assistance to impoverished children and their families around the world.
3. Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Capital Region, which received a $250 award for housing and feeding visiting families of children being cared for in local hospitals.
As part of the evening, Melissa Ward officially became district governor, succeeding Bill Nathan for the Rotary Year 1212-13. And, Sue Austin became DG-elect for 2013-14, succeeding Melissa.
The Mechanicville Rotary Club, which spearheaded a drive to obtain new winter coats for children in Schoharie County whose homes were damaged by flood, was voted the winner of the district’s “Helping Hands Award.”

Arts Center On the Hudson, Boys and Girls Club of Schenectady, Domestic Violence and Rape Crisis Services of Saratoga County, EBA Dance and Theatre, Gift of Life, Jezreel International, Joan Nicole Prince Home, Hand In Peace, Fulmont Community Action Agency/Northville, Mechanicville Area Community Services Center, Mohawk Towpath Scenic Byway Coalition Inc., Project: Cameron’s Story, Qust for Grace, Schenectady Youth Boxing, Schenectady ARC, ShelterBox USA, Stillwater Central School District, To Life!, VFW Post 420, Volunteers In Mission and Wilton Wildlife Preserve & Park.
In attendance representing the Southern Resselaer County Rotary Club were Bill and April Dowd and Murray and Maggie Forth.
