Meeting of May 12, 2011

April Dowd is inducted as “the newest Rotarian in the world at this moment” by Jim Leyhane, as President Terry Brewer applauds at right. At least two others soon will be inducted as the club gets ever closer to our goal of adding 10 new members in the 2010-2011 Rotary Year.

Dr. Craig Alexander on “Modern Dentistry”

Our speaker explains the mini-implant technique shown here, developed by a Buffalo dental surgeon. Jason outlined the procedure, which he now performs at his East Greenbush office, as part of his presentation on “Modern Dentistry” at Thursday’s club meeting.

Dr. Alexander is a Columbia High School graduate who studied at Harvard. He has been active for a number of years in visiting local elementary schools to speak to children about proper dental care.

In his presentation, he noted that dental X-ray exams have gone digital and are now done with faster film, but stiffer cardboard, and the results are quicker and the exposure to radiation is reduced. He also spoke about visual exams for oral cancer; most dentists now will do this. Early detection is very important. New equipment makes this easy, quick and relatively cheap.

He also talked about problem snoring. The cause often is in the soft palate. One possible solution is a small device that holds the tongue out of the way. It appears similar to a “binky.”

And, Dr. Alexander spent considerable time explaining the latest techniques for dental implants, which now are made smaller and of better materials and can be finished in one visit.
