Benita Zahn, anchor/reporter for WNYT NewsChannel 13, describes the newsroom operation to members of the Southern Rensselaer County Rotary Club during a visit Thursday evening.
Our normal Thursday meeting this week was traded in for a field trip to the WNYT NewsChannel13 Broadcast Center in Menands. Murray Forth arranged the event with Benita Zahn, an anchor/reporter who hosted us.
After a tour of the newsroom, club members assembled behind the cameras in the studio to observe the live 6 o’clock news telecast, anchored by Benita and Jim Kambrich. Sports director Rodger Wyland and chief meteorologist were on camera as well.
Coincidentally, one news story concerned Rotary ShelterBox contributions to relief efforts in Japan, and our club specifically got an on-air mention for supporting this ongoing project.
All four on-air staffers were gracious enough to join us for a box-lunch style dinner in the Broadcast Center conference room, where we held a Q&A session as well being filled in on the news-cycle program planning and some of the technical aspects of putting on such a production.
Members attending (13): Terry Brewer, Jim Leyhane, Murray Forth, Pat Bailey, Bill Dowd, Peter Brown, Russ Edberg, Charlie Foote, Phil Egan, Doris Calamaras, Ron Annis, Steve Phelps, Dick Drumm.
NEXT MEETING: 6:15 p.m. Thursday, March 24.
